Technical outwear will generally fall into one of three types ... insulated, hard shell or soft shell. Generally wear insulated clothes if its very cold and you are not moving too much (sitting on a chairlift), wear hard shells if its wet or very windy, and wear soft shells if you are sweating (earning your turns).
