Keep yourself posted on avalanche conditions around western Canada. The Canadian Avalanche Centre is a non-profit society promoting excellence in avalanche safety for industry and recreation.

Roughly 3/4 of all avalanche victims die from asphyxiation. If you can find the victim and get them air within 15 minutes, their chances of survival are good—barring major trauma. If you miss that window, their chances drop precipitously.

With a transciever like the Tracker, you’ll shave valuable minutes off the search, giving your companion their best possible shot at survival.

A better solution is to avoid avalanches in the first place. Take an avalanche course, learn safe travel techniques, and practice with your equipment

the science of strategic shoveling

Your partner is buried ... you find their location using your transceiver and probe ... you get your shovel out ... now what? There has been a lot of research dealing with digging folks out ... its called strategic shoveling.

Download this pdf from our friends at BCA ... its a very good paper dealing with this issue. A must read for the backcountry!

tips and product care ...

The five key points of adhesive ski skin care ...

1. Never expose adhesive ski skins to heat.

2. Protect adhesive ski skins against light and solar radiation.

3. Dry adhesive ski skins in a dark place at room temperature (without protective film, and not in the skin bag).

4. Keep dry adhesive ski skins in the skin bag, with the protective film.

5. Never store wet adhesive ski skins in the skin bag!

Glide as light as a feather with the new camlock fixing system. Less weight is a positive factor. But not enough on its own. The camlock fixing system is rugged, wear resistant, quick and easy to fit, handy and practical.

Mixed mohair/synthetic fabric. The tried-and-tested adhesive ski skin with the new camlock fixing system. Extremely resistant to wear and abrasion.

fritschi bindings

Today’s skis are evolving even more audaciously. They are not only ultra-wide and cleverly waisted but they also consistently gain in torsional rigidity. Despite their impressive width and stability, even true freeride skis are no heavyweights. Thanks to new materials and production -methods, the weight can be minimized. Naturally, this revolutionizes the downhill feeling, but only if the binding can keep up.

The Diamir Freeride Pro is a perfect match for these skittishly fat skis, providing superior power transmission and safety, even at high speed.

The wide binding design ensures optimal pressure distribution, which results in maximum grip on the descent.

In addition: With the Diamir Freeride Pro the ascent is even fun when you need a few steps to find the perfect run.

Tracker DTS avalanche beacon

The Easiest just got easier.

In 1997, the Tracker DTS revolutionized the transceiver market by introducing digital, dual antenna technology. Since then, it has become the world’s best-selling transceiver. That’s for a simple reason: it’s the easiest to use.

The Tracker DTS™ is the world's first digital avalanche beacon. It's also the first transceiver to have a dual receiving antenna. This eliminates the stop-and-go processes of traditional "grid" and "tangent" searching. Instead, the user follows a simple "flux line" search, which can be significantly faster for both novices and experts.

Warning: No transceiver is effective without proper training. Read your owner’s manual, practice thoroughly, carry a shovel and probe, and take an avalanche safety course.

sooo ... how are the roads?

Sure, the backcountry is great ... but you've still got to get to the trailhead ... right? What are the Alberta mountain road conditions? Get all the snow info you need at our snow conditions page ... and check the avy info often.

Float 30 Avalanche Airbag

Excavation time is by far the biggest contributing factor in avalanche fatalities. By reducing or eliminating burial depth you substantially increase your chances of survival. The Float 30 is the first airbag that is both affordable and easily reusable. We use a smaller cylinder, single–chamber 150–liter airbag, and super–efficient venturi system to reduce cost and weight. The airbag itself not only helps prevent burial, but protects the head, neck and upper body from trauma. With its location behind the head and away from the hips and arms, it preserves the user’s peripheral vision and his or her ability to escape the avalanche before it picks up speed.

Garmont Shogun

The new Shogun is the benchmark for step-in Touring Norm binding compatibility. Like the Radium, it is flexed for performance. Its multi-injected lower shell has a unique flex insert for touring ease, multi-injected cuff for a close, responsive fit with awesome leverage.

Burly enough to rip the toughest terrain and conditions on big skis, light enough for extended tours.

We are carrying a selection of the high performance AT boots from Garmont ... the Shogun, and the women's specific Hydra and Xena.

A Fresh Approach. Fresh tracks. Fresh ideas. That’s what Backcountry Access is all about. They've proved that, with avalanche beacons, ease-of-use is more important than range. They popularized Companion Rescue—with light, integrated shovels and probes. And they solved the winter hydration problem with their freezeproof Stash packs.
