understand the canadian avalanche danger scale

Keep yourself posted on avalanche conditions around western Canada. The Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) is a non-government, not-for-profit corporation established in 2004 to serve as Canada’s national public avalanche safety organization.

Understand the terms used to describe conditions in the backcountry ... every avy report will use the same scale of risk.

snow is falling (somewhere) ... skis are in the house

New skis, boots and accessories have arrived in the house .... and we have set up the shop for winter. The supperfat train has slowed a bit ... skis aren't really getting a whole lot bigger this season. We are just starting to think that they are normal ... thats all. Seriously though, we have several models of skis in the showroom that are seriously fat ... the Volkl Sumo, the Atomic Thug, and the granddaddy of the superfats ... the Atomic BigDaddy. These baby's all are about 125 underfoot and will absolutely kill it in the soft stuff. Build a backcountry booter or book your cat trip ... and jump on the superfat train.

A new category this year tries to blend the best of the superfats and the 100mm skis. The Volkl Katana and the Dynastar Pro XL fall into this group ... at about 115mm underfoot, these might be the magic skis this season.

For a little more versatility try the Dynastar Legend Pro, the Volkl Gotama, the Volkl Mantra, or the Atomic Pimp. At about 95 to 105 underfoot, these are a better call for many skiers ... these skis will even rip the hardpack on your way out of bounds. If you haven't made the move to a fat ski yet ... what are you waiting for. They will make you a better soft snow skier ... period. And isn't that what we really want to ski anyway.

We have a full line up of backcountry essentials ... for the serious freerider the new Marker Duke binding and the Garmont Shaman will be the call. Finally, no compromise performance in the backcountry! For the rest of us, the Garmont Endorphin is the world's most advanced boot for freeriders, ski mountaineers, and those who hike for their turns. It's as stiff and responsive as the best alpine boots, powerful to arc the biggest skis, and as mobile as the best ski mountaineering boots.

tips and product care ...

The five key points of adhesive ski skin care ...

1. Never expose adhesive ski skins to heat.

2. Protect adhesive ski skins against light and solar radiation.

3. Dry adhesive ski skins in a dark place at room temperature (without protective film, and not in the skin bag).

4. Keep dry adhesive ski skins in the skin bag, with the protective film.

5. Never store wet adhesive ski skins in the skin bag!

Glide as light as a feather with the new camlock fixing system. Less weight is a positive factor. But not enough on its own. The camlock fixing system is rugged, wear resistant, quick and easy to fit, handy and practical.

Mixed mohair/synthetic fabric. The tried-and-tested adhesive ski skin with the new camlock fixing system. Extremely resistant to wear and abrasion.

a tribute to Dave Hurd ... family man and mbc employee

Sunday February 12, 2006 was the last day in Dave’s life.  Dave spent this day with a long time friend.  This day was spent skiing in the backcountry, like hundreds of other days for Dave.  However Sunday ended in tragedy when a large avalanche took Dave from all of us, most significantly his wife and son.

Dave spent a lifetime honing his skills in the outdoors.  Most of these days were spent on a river in the summer and on skis in the winter.  It’s safe to say his three passions in life were his family, backcountry skiing and fly-fishing.

When it came to skiing, Dave was a true veteran. He took to back country skiing long before it’s popularity of today.  This would be a novel if I went into his experience, and his understanding of winter travel in the mountains.  I will say that Dave always toured as a family man, by this I mean every decision he made out there was based on going home at the end of the day.  Countless people credit Dave for their own experience and safety in the mountains, either as first timers learning the ropes or more refined skiers furthering their knowledge.  Not only was he an absolute delight to go on trips with, he was an absolute delight to watch.  Many ski poles have familiar dents in them from the clapping together as you watched Dave turn skiing into an art form.

Dave’s time on the river is as equally impressive.  He is easily one of the most seasoned fly-fisherman out there.  Countless people also credit Dave for watching other anglers gets skunked as they are yelling, “got one, fish on”.

Dave was one of a kind, and in his case “kind” is the key word.  His calm demeanor made everyone around him enjoy his companionship.  Once again I’ll say “countless people” just thank Dave for being Dave.

A memorial fund has been set for Dave's son. Trust Fund Info: TD Canada Trust, Wendy Seniuk in trust for Logan Hurd. Please contact Brad at MBC 403 686- 2453 for more information regarding deposits to the fund.

Stiff flex places the boot well beyond the realm of any existing AT boot and most recreational alpine boots. Best paired with bigger freeride skis.

Featuring the anatomically designed Cizeta freeride liners with integrated spoiler and plastic reinforcement.

The Shaman comes with interchangeable ISO Alpine and ISO Touring norm soles, for use with touring bindings like Marker Duke, Naxo NX21 and Fritschi Freeride Plus, or high-end alpine bindings.

Tracker DTS ... easy

Drop by and check out the Tracker and our other backcountry gear. In 1997, Backcountry Access (BCA), with the Tracker DTS, revolutionized the transceiver market by introducing digital, dual antenna technology. Since then, it has become the world’s best-selling transceiver. That’s for a simple reason: it’s the easiest to use. Go big ... but play safe!

A Fresh Approach. Fresh tracks. Fresh ideas. That’s what Backcountry Access is all about. They've proved that, with avalanche beacons, ease-of-use is more important than range. They popularized Companion Rescue—with light, integrated shovels and probes. And they solved the winter hydration problem with their freezeproof Stash packs.

Giro Fuse helmet

Of all the ski helmets now on the market, the Giro Fuse sets the standard for ventilation and comfort for others to chase.

What really sets the Fuse apart is the ability to close off the six top vents simply by sliding a handle on the rear. For spring skiing, the Fuse also has removable foam plugs on six side vents and the earflaps can be removed. With all the vent options wide open, the Fuse is easily the coolest ski helmet available -- and we're not just talking "cool" as in ventilation
